Pigmentation: What Causes It and Which Treatments Can Help?

Pigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we see at Monali — and also one of the most misunderstood.

Whether it appears as sun spots, uneven patches, freckles or areas of darker skin, pigmentation can develop for a number of reasons. And while it can be tempting to reach for the latest brightening product or treatment, successfully managing pigmentation starts with understanding why it is there in the first place.

What causes pigmentation?

Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin — the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin, hair and eyes.

A number of factors can trigger this increased production, including:

  • Sun exposure and UV damage

  • Hormonal changes

  • Ageing

  • Inflammation or previous breakouts

  • Certain medications

  • Genetics

  • Heat and environmental factors

Living in Perth also means our skin is exposed to significant UV throughout the year, making daily sun protection particularly important when managing pigmentation.

Not all pigmentation is the same

This is important.

What looks like “pigmentation” on the surface can have different underlying causes, which means the treatment that works beautifully for one person may not be appropriate for another.

Sun-induced pigmentation, post-inflammatory pigmentation and hormonally influenced pigmentation such as melasma can all behave differently.

This is why at Monali we prefer to assess the skin before recommending a treatment plan rather than taking a one-treatment-fits-all approach.

Which treatments can help pigmentation?

Depending on the type of pigmentation, your skin and its individual needs, we may recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments.

IPL Pigmentation

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can be particularly effective for targeting visible areas of sun-induced pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Controlled pulses of light target pigment within the skin, which can gradually darken before naturally lifting away, helping to reveal a clearer and more even-looking complexion.

Microneedling

Microneedling supports the skin's natural renewal process while stimulating collagen production.

At Monali, we combine microneedling with targeted mesotherapy peptides, allowing us to further customise the treatment to the individual skin. It can be beneficial when pigmentation is accompanied by concerns such as uneven texture, fine lines, enlarged pores or acne scarring.

Professional Peels

Professional skin peels can help improve dullness, uneven tone and areas of pigmentation by encouraging controlled exfoliation and skin renewal.

The type and strength of peel should always be selected according to the individual skin rather than assuming stronger is better.

LED Light Therapy

LED can also be incorporated into a skin treatment plan to support the skin's natural repair processes, calm inflammation and promote overall skin health.

Home care matters too

In-clinic treatments are only one part of managing pigmentation.

What you do at home — particularly daily sun protection — can have a significant impact on both your results and the likelihood of pigmentation returning.

A personalised skincare routine may include ingredients designed to support skin renewal, brighten uneven tone and help regulate pigment production. The right ingredients will depend on your skin and the type of pigmentation being treated.

And yes — SPF really is non-negotiable.

There isn't one perfect pigmentation treatment

Pigmentation can be complex, and sometimes the best approach isn't the most aggressive one.

At Monali, our focus is on understanding your skin first and then selecting treatments and home care that are appropriate for your particular pigmentation, skin type and goals.

If you're unsure what's causing your pigmentation or which treatment may be suitable, we're happy to help.
